THE IMPACT OF THE TRANSPORT MARK-UP ON THE FORMATION OF TRADE IMBALANCE IN THE VALUE-ADDED TRADING SYSTEM

This study analyses the relationship between the transport mark-up and the formation of trade imbalances in the value-added trading system among participants of transport and logistics chains. The article examines the impact of the organisational complexity of multimodal and intermodal transportation on the pricing of transport services and, consequently, on the distribution of gross value added in global supply chains. The results of an empirical study of the correlation between the transport mark-up and the key parameters of international trade – the cost of transport services, export and import volumes – are presented. The methodological basis of the study is a parametric linear model that allows one to assess the marginal effects of each of the factors under consideration. The statistical significance of the results is confirmed using Pearson correlation coefficients and the multiple coefficient of determination. It is established that an increase in the cost of transport services and export volumes is accompanied by a rise in the transport mark-up, while the expansion of import flows exerts a restraining effect on its dynamics. The optimal (extremal) value of the transport mark-up for land and pipeline transport services is determined, beyond which the competitiveness of transport services declines and freight volumes decrease. The findings have practical relevance for the formation of tariff policies of transport enterprises and can be used in the development of economic policy measures aimed at optimising the participation of national economies in global value chains, as well as in assessing the real contribution of the transport and logistics sector to gross value added creation. In the context of the Trade in Value Added (TiVA) concept developed by the OECD in conjunction with the WTO, the data obtained allow for a more accurate understanding of the structure of the trade balance of transit economies, taking into account the logistics component.
