THE BELARUSIAN GEOPHYSICAL OBSERVATORY BUILDING: METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES IN THE RESTORATION AND RECONSTRUCTION OF ITS ARCHITECTURAL APPEARANCE

This article examines the most recent phase in the architectural history of the Belarusian Geophysical Observatory in Minsk, a notable example of Soviet avant-garde architecture designed by rationalist architect I. Valodźka in 1929–1930. The study focuses on a critical evaluation of restoration interventions carried out in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, situating them within the evolving understanding of the building’s architectural significance, the limits of acceptable reconstruction, and the methodologies applied to heritage preservation of avant-garde structures. The main objective is to document and analyze the stages of the building’s restoration, identify methodological challenges, and assess the outcomes of recent conservation efforts.
The research is based on the analysis of archival project documentation, historical records, and visual sources, combined with technical and on-site architectural surveys. A comparative approach examines restoration strategies implemented in 1997–2007 and 2020–2025. The article traces the shift from utilitarian maintenance interventions to scientifically grounded restoration, highlighting changes in criteria for evaluating the building’s historical and artistic value.
Findings reveal inaccuracies in previous restoration decisions, largely due to limited research data and misinterpretation of sources. The study offers methodological insights regarding the reconstructing the unrealized color scheme by architect I. Valodźka, the restoration of the historical character of interior spaces, and the assessment of later modifications as integral components of the building’s construction history.
These results carry broader methodological significance for the study, preservation, and restoration of avant-garde architecture and provide practical guidance for heritage management and conservation practices concerning interwar architectural monuments.
