The article examines the results of assessing the applicability of current methods for calculating the shear resistance under transverse forces of reinforced concrete beams made of structural expanded-clay concrete with transverse reinforcement. The relevance of the topic stems from the broad prospects for the use of lightweight concretes in load-bearing structures, which at the same time combine the characteristics of enclosing structures. However, the topic remains insufficiently studied: there are no design methods that account for the structural features of lightweight concretes. The structure of lightweight concrete, determined by the presence of porous aggregate, governs the specific features of its behaviour under transverse forces.
A review of research on structural expanded-clay concrete is carried out, including the contribution of the national scientific school to the study of its physical and mechanical properties and to the development of methods for calculating reinforced concrete structures, in particular shear resistance. The design models of shear resistance embodied in domestic and foreign normative documents are systematized, and the ways of accounting for the features of lightweight concrete are noted. An extensive experimental database of test results for beam specimens made of lightweight concretes has been compiled, from which, according to a number of principal criteria, a target sample of beams with transverse reinforcement made of expanded clay or porous aggregates similar to it in properties has been selected. The selected specimens were calculated by various methods with subsequent statistical processing of the results. This calculation made it possible to assess the degree of agreement between the normative models and the experimental data and to identify the features of their application to lightweight concrete structures. Based on the analysis, the need for further study of the influence of the principal structural and physical-mechanical parameters on the shear resistance of expanded-clay concrete beams is substantiated. The need for applying numerical modelling, in particular the use of the SIMULIA Abaqus software package, and a full-scale experiment is justified.
