economic behavior of households, agent-based modeling, bounded rationality, systematic reviewAbstract
The concept of representative agent is increasingly being questioned and the issue of modeling more realistic reactions of economic agents, in particular, such heterogeneous and unstructured social macro groups as households is becoming relevant, especially in the context of crises caused by entrepreneurs’ actions and external shocks. The relevance of the study of methodological and practical approaches to simulation of heterogeneous and not always rational households is due to the need for their adaptation to institutional changes and solving related problems on assessing the management decisions’ consequences on the one hand and the rapid development of tools for modeling and forecasting socio-economic processes on the other. In order to identify modern approaches to the simulation of cognitive households, a systematic review of empirical articles focused on building agent-based models with households imitating their economic behavior was completed. Search in the journal «Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation» and the RSCI database yielded 235 articles. 38 articles selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria were categorized into categories depending on (i) the source of decision-making rules, (ii) the form of issuing preferences, (iii) the cognitive process factors. The distinctive characteristics of these groups are revealed, and the significance and possible application of the factors of psychological mechanisms and information limits in agent-based models are discussed.
